It Takes a Child to Choose the Unknown Path

Ruby and I had our picnic on a sizable log jutting over the creek.  Clear water, dancing with tiny fish, slipped under us.

"This sandwich is really good, Dad."  Her mouth smacked, full and sticky.  "I want you to make all my sandwiches from now on."

"Food just tastes better on a picnic, that's all."

She flashed an incredulous glance, pausing mid-chew.

"No, really," I said.

After we finished, we tramped down the muddy trail, Ruby spinning a tale of her own concoction about two ten-year-old girls, their dragons, how they all became spies and replaced themselves with clones so their parents wouldn't miss them while they battled witches and a truly dastardly villain.

We stopped at a fork in the path.

"Which way do you want to go?" I asked.

"Do you know where each of these paths go?"

"I know where that one goes," I said, pointing to the left.  "I've never been down the other one.  I have no idea where it comes out."

Before I could say anything else, she lurched down the unknown path.

"Come on, what are you waiting for?" she said.

That's my girl.
